Am going to Hanoi next month and will be staying away from the taxis, as I like to walk or bike, not to mention the stories I’m reading about their tendency to rip-off tourists….
My questions are:
1) Approximately how long will it take to walk from Hoan Kiem Lake to West Lake? If I decide to take a bus, is that possible ? (it looks to be about 6 km or 2 mi on a map)?
2) About how long to walk from Hoa Lo Prison to the Old Quarter?
Thanks in advance!
A:1) Approximately how long will it take to walk from Hoan Kiem Lake to West Lake? If I decide to take a bus, is that possible ? (it looks to be about 6 km or 2 mi on a map)? 2 mi sounds about right – I’ve walked this several times, an interesting walk too – about an hour I’d say
2) About how long to walk from Hoa Lo Prison to the Old Quarter? That’s really short – 15 minutes (my friend stays at the Melia next door and I also went down there several times)
Hanoi is a very interesting place to walk once you’ve gotten over crossing the street! I usually walk between the train station and my hotel in the Old Qtr. Traffic can be pure hell around rush hour – impossible to cross some streets because of the mass of motorbikes – you will be forced to take a roundabout route at those times. This is one city where it is impossible to be bored!
A: Bus #15 goes from Hoan Kiem Lake (across from City View Cafe building) to the West Lake/Truc Bach Lake area. Last year the fare was 3,000VND. I took it once, but got off short of my destination – can be difficult to know exactly where you are.
Just board the bus and sit down – fare will be collected after the bus starts.
